Many technical drives and devices are controlled by micro-processing units. For this purpose necessary data about the actual state of the machine are collected by sensors. According to this information a control value is calculated by the micro-processor to achieve the desired behaviour of the device. For this purpose often a mathematical model of the real machine is employed. Finally, the necessary power for the intended motion is produced by actuators.

The development of such technical products requires knowledge at least in Mechanics, Electrical Engineering and Informatics, which constitute the general term of Mechatronics.
